Tony Scherman’s Intimate Drawings
September 11, 2008
The casual quality of drawing makes the informal nature of the show even more fitting. And Scherman says that it speaks to a completely different act than painting his darkly distressed encaustic work.
“When you paint you put light in and take it away. You’re sort of god and the arrow of time goes both ways. Paintings need to be finished. Imagine a part of the universe where god forgot. But when you’re drawing you’re not god, you’re just passing through.”
The show features about 20 drawings of figures, eroticism, animals and more. Some are ideas for painting, but a lot were done after a painting as well. A daily drawer, Scherman had noticed a rising interest in the artistic community to see what he had stashed away.
“Along with figurative painting the drawing got trashed. But now because people want to paint again they find that they can’t, and the reason they can’t is because they can’t draw. So Drawing has become interesting.”
Intimate Drawings will be on display from Fri September 12 – Fri October 10 at Fredericton’s Gallery Connexion.
