Stitch by Numbers

Karijo Rother is drawn to the curving shapes because she finds them very organic. The natural feeling of the work pushes it beyond an abstract play of colours into a more emotive realm. Karijo Rother wants her work to be head-turning.
“I want to do really dramatic pieces that hit people and they don’t know why. What I’m aiming for is to have some sort of emotional impact on people.”
Creating an atmosphere for people to look at her pieces and bring to them what they will, Karijo Rother enjoys hearing responses to her work. She herself is still discovering what it is she’s trying to get across.
She’s still playing with different colour and stitching combinations, and is beginning to work on larger pieces. She’s also tried other shapes, but she keeps coming back to curves.
“I’m really trying to see what I can do with an element that’s very simple. It’s a challenge to see how much I can do with it while incorporating the things that are important to me—drama, energy and movement.”
Numbers will be on display from Fri October 3 – Wed October 29 at Ottawa’s Atrium Gallery.
