More than Meets the Mind

September 4, 2008

While meant to evoke the isolation of urban living, the spaces Karklin creates are also spaces that he’s been in. Growing up, Karklin moved so often between his parents that it became efficient for him to have fewer things. The bare rooms in his photos are similar to the rooms he grew up in.

Although he aims to provide a legitimate archive of his memories, he’s also interested in having the viewer think about their own relation to spaces. He intentionally has his models turned away and somewhat obscured to allow subjective interpretation by the viewer.

“My work really becomes finished with the viewer. I’m interested in narrative, but since these pieces have a lack of narrative, the viewer provides it.

It’s hidden and really subtle. I like the idea of voyeurism, so I really want to invite the viewer to become a voyeur where they’re looking at something that’s attracting them while at the same time urging them to withdraw.”

No Vacancy will be on display starting Fri September 5th at Calgary’s 809 Gallery.
